Speaking as a Michael (a Hebrew name meaning "Who is like God"), I am very proud of my name And I believe that I -. Above all - to live up to its title, of course, my mother is likely to disagree, I think the phrase "little devil" would probably mouth so she describes the many stages of my childhood.
But then my mother has her own problems, apparently her name (Kathleen) is a Celtic name meaning "Little Darling". Hmmm, that's not how I thought of her during those regular occasions when she punish me for my "not like God" ... behavior!
And that's the fun of baby name meaning - parents make naming decisions based on very many different reasons, including family traditions, religion, culture, uniqueness and "it sounds really good. " But - in the Western world - we rarely do genuine research on the history or the real meaning of baby names. So when the poor / lucky child finally finds the meaning of his "really good sounding name, the results can be interesting, ironic, unfortunate or just sometimes hilarious.
It can be fun to be with family / friends found out the names of the meanings and groped to make the connection between the two. For example, my eldest brother Clive is apparently "cliff dweller", which is a coincidence, because he lives on top of a very steep hill along! Or why not play the game of celebrities - consider the following:
Badu (as in r n'b singer Erykah Badu): African name meaning "the tenth child born"
Winona (as in actress Winona Ryder): Sioux name meaning "oldest daughter"
Aaliyah (the late r n'b singer): Arabic name meaning "great and noble"
Hilary (as in actresses Duff Swank): Latin name meaning "joy"
Some cultures have very interesting traditions when it comes to baby name meanings. For example, Hindu names usually have links with some very positive things, like truth, beauty, happiness, blessings, etc, or one of the Hindu gods. In Sikh culture, girls are always the center or the name of "Kaur" meaning "princess", while boys have the surname or the environment, "Singh", meaning "lion."
My African friend once said that many Africans have a different name corresponding day of the week, when they are incurred. I think it's a very nice tradition, but in my case, my middle name would be "probe" (for Sunday)! Hmmmm ...
Regardless of the name is selected, or the thought of her "bundle of joy" just, it's worth doing some 'meaningful research. And it's easier than ever, and the wealth of Internet resources and books available, including our own site at www.all-about-baby-names.com, which is full of resources, advice and information on baby names, meanings and baby products for children.
Your search may provide some surprises, for example, the pretty-sounding name "Malory" is French and means "bad luck". You can circumvent this by spelling it "Mallory", but it means "Without good fortune" in Old German!
Alternatively, you can find a little confused by different meanings of the same name, for example "Leah" is the name of a beautiful girl, but what does that mean? Well ...
"In Hebrew it means" cow "or" Weary one "- uugghhh!
"In Greek it means" Good News "
"When the Assyrian, meaning" Lord, Lord "
And one final warning: if you want to go funky, unusual-sounding name, be sure to avoid "Kiss" - its significance Uganda is the "death of a ruined family home!"
